On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, President Ghani announced that, in response to the demands of the members of the Peace Consultative Jirga, he has now decided to release 878 Taliban prisoners from the prisons. Mr. Ghani emphasizes that the Afghan Peace roadmap is the same as the one that was presented at the Peace Jirga Consultative members. Mr. Ghani continues to emphasize that these prisoners are supposed to be released on the basis of the decree issued in the next ten days and that special measures will be taken in the coming days to treat inmates who are severely ill.
The government emphasizes the release of Taliban prisoners as goodwill from the start of peace talks with the Taliban, which the government’s armed opposition has devalued, adding that the group has regularly released Afghan prisoners from their prisons and they are building this attitude. The Taliban have not yet voiced their views for the new decision of the Afghan presidency.
