Zalmai Khalilzad, the Special Envoy for Afghan Peace, has emphasized the peace talks in Afghanistan, saying that peace efforts are needed to hold presidential elections in the country. Mr. Khalilzad wrote in a Twitter message that peace and elections are two separate processes that should be institutionalized in Afghanistan and that elections should not be a victim of peace.
He also emphasized transparent and credible elections and called for the rapid preparation of the Afghan electoral institutions to complete the voter registration and to hire and train the staff needed to hold the elections on time.
