Federica Mogherini arrived in Kabul on an unannounced trip

Federica Mogherini, EU foreign policy head, arrived in Kabul on an unplanned journey. Ms. Mogherini will meet with the leaders of the National Unity Government. Although the focus of these discussions is not clear, it is likely that the EU’s foreign policy chief will discuss political developments and signs of progress of peace process in a meeting with senior Afghan government officials.
Ms. Mogherini had already arrived in Pakistan and had meetings with senior officials in the country, including the head of the Pakistan Army Chief of Staff and foreign minister Shah Mahmood Quraishi. According to Pakistani media, Ms. Mogherini joined a shared news conference with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmud Qureshi, during the conference she stated that Islamabad has played a fundamental role in the Afghan peace talks.
