Speaking on the first day of Eid, President Ghani said in a speech that the national unity government is in the final days of its legal term and therefore cannot decide on the Afghan peace process. Mr. Ghani insists that elections must be held for peace and the rule of law will make this difficult decision. “Can a weak government make peace?” Can a government which is in the final phase of its legal term take difficult decisions? “To secure peace and make it necessary for the determination and competence the election will determine its fate.”
The president remains convinced that peace talks with the Taliban are unconditional, but peace with the group will be legitimate, he added, adding that Afghan citizens want peace, but that should not be a party and revelry phenomenon.
