As the ISIL group have been defeated, now in Syria and Iraq, it is considered a new threat to Afghanistan. While the United States is struggling with the Taliban to achieve the desired outcome of a political solution to the Afghan conflict, it is believed that now ISIS will be Pakistan’s most recent proxy tool to fulfill Islamabad’s strategic depth. Lawrence Sellin, a retired US officer who has worked in Afghanistan, believes that after the Taliban, ISIL fighters are Pakistan’s new proxy war tool to serve Pakistan interests in Afghanistan territory.
“Right now, fears have increased the presence of ISIL in Afghanistan, but in reality, the phenomenon is managed and maintained by the Pakistanis,” said Mr. Lawrence, in an interview with the Pasbanan. As you can see, in 2010, when the Pakistani army launched an armed campaign against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the eastern and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the group now has migrated to areas of Nangarhar, whose goal was to form the same group. In fact, this tactical performance was carried out by Pakistani military forces, which created new foundations for ISIS.”
Meanwhile, the Russian ambassador to Kabul believes that in order to destroy ISIL, the United States must allow Russia to jointly work for the destruction of ISIL in Afghanistan. “The ISIL is a common threat, and in 2015, when the group found a physical presence in Afghanistan, we urged NATO and the United States to take a serious stand against this group,” said Alexander Mantitski. “You know that most of the fighters of this group are from Central Asia, and in your country, they are looking to create safe havens to cultivate here to overthrow the regimes of Central Asia and China and to set up their oppositions in these countries. In fact, their basic purpose is to create a caliphate, and they should be given a shared share in toppling the group so that their concerns are resolved.”
ISIS is currently present in eastern provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar, and Nuristan, but in the latest case, it is said that the group is trying to create their save heavens only for treating the neighboring countries of Afghanistan with their presence in the borders of Central Asia and China. But the Afghan government speaks of serious struggle against this group.
