At the height of tensions between the United States and Tehran, reports are now coming from Washington that US has imposed new sanctions on Iran. The sanctions were subsequently lifted by the Donald Trump administration after Tehran launched missile strikes on a US military base in Iraq in response to the killing of Qassim Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force. According to reports, the sanctions have been imposed on the basis of President Donald Trump’s extraordinary instruction to Iran.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Finance Minister Manouchehr told a news conference yesterday that the sanctions were imposed on senior Iranian officials. According to information provided by US officials, the sanctions were imposed on Ali Shamkhani, head of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran; Gul Meerrzah Soleimani, the commander of the Basij Corps, and Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, the deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Army. Washington has also warned that the sanctions will increase if Iran continues to respond.
