The US secretary of state said Washington has it prepared to leave Afghanistan, but there is still no agreement on the timetable for withdrawal from the country. Mr. Pompeo, yesterday evening arrived in Afghanistan on an unannounced trip, he has said: “We must tell to the Taliban that we are preparing for the withdrawal of our forces from Afghanistan. But I make one thing clear that we have not agreed on a timetable of withdrawal yet.”
The senior US official said the presence of US troops in Afghanistan is “based on the security situation in the country.” Mr. Pompeo said that real progress has been made in Afghanistan’s peace talks, and various groups have come to an agreement on a draft of finalizing peace. This is while the seventh round of peace talks will be held between US and Taliban delegates next week in Qatar.
