Khalilzad: Ghani and Abdullah should not repeat the mistakes of 2014

Zalmai Khalilzad, the US special envoy for peace in Afghanistan, said after the signing of the political agreement between Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah that both leaders should not repeat the mistakes made during the national unity government.

After a long time, President Ghani and Abdullah have agreed on a comprehensive government in which Abdullah will lead the peace process, Afghan media reported, quoting Khalilzad.

He added that the compromise plan had been in place for 10 weeks and that we welcomed it and wished the new government success.

Khalilzad said the United States was ready to partner with the new government in the peace process that would end the war. This process should be based on fulfilling the commitments made to date.

The US special envoy for Afghanistan’s peace affairs added: “It is time to take seriously the determination of the Afghan people and the world to see the end of the conflict.”

Abdullah must move with full speed and urgency, and with the sincere support of the current government.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah put an end to the election crisis after three months of tensions and divided the government.
