According to the Italian news website “ANSA,” Lorenzi Gurini arrived in Herat the day before to attend the end of the Italian military mission in Afghanistan. In addition, the news website wrote that on Tuesday, Mr. Lorzenzi participated in a ceremony to lower the Italian flag, which had been flying in Afghanistan for 20 years.

 

The Italian military has ended its military mission in western Herat, Afghanistan, where all foreign troops are expected to leave Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. Italian officials, meanwhile, have said that all of their facilities and bases will be managed by the Afghan military.

 

Italian military sources told the ANSA news website that there are currently 800 Italian troops in Herat and that the equipment needed by the soldiers will be transferred to their country soon.

 

“We do not want Afghanistan to become a haven for terrorists again. Therefore, we will continue to strengthen the Afghan security and defense forces by continuing their training mission so that the people of Afghanistan would be safe,” said Italian Defense Minister Lorenzi Gorini. “we will do our best to preserve the achievements of two decades in their country.”

 

All the hundreds of Afghan citizens who have worked with Italian forces will be transferred to Italy, and this process will start in mid-June. We are trying to protect these citizens from the Taliban. We do not want to leave the Afghan civilians and their families who worked with the Italians.” he said

 

The Italian defense minister has said that 270 Afghan nationals who were allies of the Italian military are currently expected to leave Afghanistan. At least 400 Afghan citizens have been transferred to Italy so far. The Taliban said in a newsletter a few days ago that they had nothing to do with Afghan translators, provided they repented of their past activities.
